Ever since Evanston's first-ever brewery opened in 2013, the suburb has been able to once again call itself home to a Temperance movement. But this one is different. Unlike the one that led to Prohibition, this one is about advancing craft beer.
Temperance was founded by former architect and homebrewer Josh Gilbert, while head brewmaster Claudia Brewster is a former marine biologist. But lest anyone think this is a fly-by-night operation, Temperance is legit—the brewery took home a gold medal at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival for its Gatecrasher IPA, and its Smittytown extra special bitter has a devoted following.
